What's Worth Watching in the Sky This Month
At 2:35 Wednesday morning Eastern time, roughly five tons of abandoned hardware hit the Moon at about 5,400 miles per hour near Einstein crater, on the western edge of the Earth-facing side. It was the spent upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9, left over from a January 2025 launch that sent two commercial landers toward the surface. Nobody aimed it at the Moon, which is precisely what makes the event worth paying attention to.
Cast off and forgotten, the stage drifted for eighteen months until orbit tracker Bill Gray ran the numbers and realized it was on a collision course. His final prediction landed within a few seconds and a few kilometers of the actual impact.
Nobody saw a flash, however. The site was in daylight and the stage was hollow, so the sub-second flare that amateur observers had hoped to capture never separated itself from the glare of sunlit rock. On the surface, that looked like a bust — except that William Jo, the UT Austin researcher whose team modeled the collision in advance, had warned that the flash was the wrong thing to watch for.
"The flash isn't really the story here," Jo told Space.com in July.
He was right. Within hours, the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile detected spectral fingerprints of sodium and lithium in the plume for five to ten minutes after impact. The sodium came from lunar soil; the lithium, in all likelihood, came from the rocket — a fragment of Earth-built machinery briefly vaporized and glowing, then detectable from a mountaintop 240,000 miles away. South Korea's Danuri orbiter has since released before-and-after images showing a faint smudge where there had been none the day before.
The new crater should be about 90 feet across, insignificant on a world already carrying roughly 3,000 pieces of human-made material weighing 209 tons in total. It is nevertheless the first lunar crater in history to arrive with a complete biography: what made it, when and where it struck, how fast it was moving and at what angle. With more than a hundred lunar missions planned this decade, that kind of information is becoming increasingly useful.
So much for the opening act. The rest of August belongs, almost embarrassingly, to a single Wednesday. On the 12th, North America gets a partial solar eclipse in the middle of the day, the Perseid meteor shower peaks that same night, and several planets line up before sunrise for anyone willing to be awake for it. Three headline events occupy the same calendar date, which looks like blind luck until you consider the geometry.
Start with the eclipse, because it is the event most people will hear about. Totality crosses eastern Greenland, western Iceland and northern Spain, while the United States gets only the fringe. Twenty-six states will see the Moon take a bite out of the Sun, with northern Maine getting the deepest partial eclipse in the lower 48 at about 28 percent, while most of New England and New York will see somewhere between 10 and 20 percent coverage.
If you live in Texas, Nebraska or Nevada, that means nothing dramatic is happening overhead at lunchtime, and it is worth saying so plainly rather than burying it. Daylight will not visibly dim anywhere in the country. For Northeasterners who do get a partial eclipse, the usual rule applies without exception: certified eclipse glasses or a properly filtered instrument. No shortcuts, no sunglasses and no looking through an unfiltered phone camera.
The Perseids are the bigger national event, and they are already underway. Earth has been moving through the debris trail of Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle since mid-July, and NASA's Bill Cooke, who runs the agency's Meteoroid Environment Office, has described the shower as "rich in bright meteors and fireballs" — the strongest annual shower on that measure. Under a genuinely dark sky next week, rates of 80 to 100 meteors an hour are plausible.
That brings us back to the apparent coincidence, and why it isn't one. A total solar eclipse can occur only at new moon, when the Moon passes directly between Earth and the Sun. A new moon, by definition, spends the night on the daytime side of the planet, contributing essentially no light to the sky where you're trying to watch meteors. The same alignment that dims the Sun at midday gives you the darkest possible night roughly twelve hours later. The calendar didn't get lucky; orbital geometry did what it always does, and August happened to be standing in the right place.
None of this requires equipment. The dark window is open now and runs through about the 15th, so any clear night between now and then is worth taking. Give your eyes 45 minutes away from screens, find somewhere with an open horizon and don't fixate on the constellation Perseus: the meteors appear to radiate from there, but they can streak across any part of the sky. The Milky Way will be arching through the Summer Triangle, overhead and unmistakable from any reasonably dark rural location.
One loose thread hangs over the month. Corona Borealis reaches its highest point on August evenings, and inside that small semicircle of stars sits T Coronae Borealis, the recurrent nova astronomers have been expecting to erupt since 2024. It has declined to cooperate for two years running. If it goes this month, it will be easy to find; if it doesn't, that is simply what stars do, and the wait continues.
The back half of August is quieter but hardly empty. Venus reaches its greatest separation from the Sun in the evening sky around the 15th, sitting high in the west after sunset and brightening through the fall, while Jupiter climbs back out of the dawn glare around mid-month for early risers. Then, on the night of the 27th into the 28th, the Americas get the best seats for a deep partial lunar eclipse that puts 96 percent of the full Sturgeon Moon into Earth's shadow. It will be close enough to total that most people watching will call it a blood moon, and the reddish color will make the description hard to argue with.
The month closes with a departure rather than an arrival. On August 30, a Falcon Heavy is scheduled to lift off from Kennedy Space Center at 7:26 a.m. Eastern carrying the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, a four-billion-dollar observatory with a mirror the size of Hubble's and a field of view at least a hundred times wider. It is bound for a gravitational parking point a million miles away and is going up ahead of schedule, which is not a sentence one often gets to write about a flagship space mission.
Roman herself was NASA's first chief of astronomy and the first woman to hold an executive position there, joining the agency in 1959 after spending much of her youth in a field that told her women didn't belong in it. "If I hadn't been stubborn, I would've been talked out of it years earlier," she said later.
The telescope named for her will spend a decade counting galaxies. August opened with a piece of our own carelessness burning a trace of lithium into the lunar sky and closes with something leaving Earth deliberately. Both are worth looking up for.
